Maine Medical Center offers an ideal environment in which to train infectious disease fellows. The hospital provides primary care services to the Greater Portland community and is a referral center for the entire state of Maine and parts of New Hampshire. The Infectious Disease consultation service encompasses a wide array of infections that include the complications of chemotherapy and renal transplantation, HIV, surgical specialties and diseases of international refugees and travelers.
The division of infectious diseases is staffed by seven board-certified infectious disease specialists and three board certified pediatric infectious diseases specialists, each with particular clinical or research interests. The division is closely allied with the microbiology laboratory and the hospital pharmacy. Four Infectious Disease pharmacists hold a joint appointment in the division. The fellows enjoy a close working relationship with this faculty in a supportive environment.
There are several educational programs devoted to specific areas of infectious disease. The incoming fellow can choose from among several tracks so that they can focus their educational experience on their career goals.
The division oversees a hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Program in conjunction with the Pharmacy and has a working relationship with Infection Prevention and the hospital epidemiologist. A multidisciplinary team of physicians from the division with support of nurse practitioners, social workers, dietitian, and clerical staff provides HIV consultations and viral hepatitis treatment, based in its own facility.
Fellows have a weekly clinic at the Gilman Clinic to learn HIV and viral hepatitis management and an approximately twice per month general infectious disease clinic where they are exposed to outpatient ID consults, outpatient parental antimicrobial therapy (OPAT), and travel medicine. Fellows may also rotate through the STD clinic, the tuberculosis clinic, and the renal transplant infectious disease clinic. They also go to the Preble Street Learning Collaborative, a clinic for people experiencing homelessness, once per month.
The infectious disease fellowship is one of over 20 residency and fellowship programs at MMC, including one of 13 fellowships. Medical fellows meet regularly for joint conferences, and enjoy frequent opportunities for collaborative education.
MMC supports one new fellow per year for two years of training. Candidates must have successfully completed three years of internal medicine training in an approved allopathic or osteopathic training program and be board eligible in internal medicine.
Upon completion of the fellowship, our recent graduates have gone on to clinical practice in academic and community based practices in Vermont, Tennessee, Washington, California, New York, Illinois, Rhode Island and Canada.
Several recent fellows have been accepted to the Preventive Medicine Fellowship to gain a Masters of Public Health. This flexible program also offers the possibility of starting during the second year of Infectious Disease fellowship.
