Applications & Interviews - Virtual format

  • We are committed to a holistic review of each application. This coupled with virtual interviews will result in interview acceptances being released in mid to late October.
  • We will notify you by email from Thalamus about whether or not we are able to offer you an interview.
  • We use Thalamus as a platform to offer, schedule, and manage our interview dates.
    • You will create a profile within Thalamus to accept an interview offer, this cannot be done until you are offered your first interview.
    • The Thalamus Application Use Guide will assist you in setting up an account.
  • We participate in the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) and use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Interview Details: 2023-2024

  • After completing a holistic review, interview acceptances will be released in mid to late October
  • We will stop reviewing new applications on November 1
  • Interview dates from November through January
  • One day per week (typically Monday or Tuesday)
  • We will be interviewing remotely this year using Thalamus to host our interview day
  • Informal virtual sessions will be offered with residents for those interviewing, typically on the evening prior
  • We will continue to offer interviews until our dates are filled
  • We will not offer more interviews than we have available interview slots, with the caveat that invited applicants have 1 week to respond to the offer of an interview
  • Afternoon interview dates have been created to accommodate applicants located in different time zones

Wait List

  • Once all interview dates are filled we will offer a small number of applicants a place on the waiting list for when there are inevitable cancellations.
  • Applicants who receive an interview from the waitlist are at no disadvantage to anyone else interviewing with the program.
    • Nearly every year one or more of our matched applicants come in off the waiting list.
  • For those on the wait list, we will communicate interview openings throughout the interview season (sometimes on quite short notice).
  • We will notify all applicants of their status by December 1, 2023.

Preference Signaling

  • We will be participating in Preference Signaling during the 2022-2023 Application Cycle.
  • Emergency Medicine as a specialty has decided to participate in preference signaling but will not participate in the other components of the supplemental application, Past Experiences or Geographic Preferences.
  • CORD has created an Applicant/Advisor Supplemental Guide for those applying in emergency medicine.

Visiting Portland and Maine Medical Center

  • CORD and the AAMC have recommended virtual interviews for the 2023-2024 Application Cycle.
  • CORD provides resource for applicants to Emergency Medicine Residency Programs including guidance for preference signaling and geographic preference. These resources will be updated throughout the application season.
  • Maine Medical Center office of Graduate Medical Education plans to offer in person Open Houses with the GME staff prior to the interview season. These sessions are designed to allow applicants to visit Portland and Maine Medical Center. By design, these sessions are blinded to individual training programs and attendance will have no impact on interview season decisions. These sessions are for applicants to all Maine Medical Center programs and are not specific to emergency medicine.
  • There may be an opportunity for a second look day with the EM residency at the end of the season once our rank list is submitted and prior to applicant rank list certification.

  • Completed ERAS Application
  • Medical school transcript
  • USMLE scores (Step 1 required)

  • 3 letters of recommendation (min. of 1 traditional EM SLOE)
  • We will review SLOE from non-EM Residency Programs, Off-Service, and Sub-specialty EM rotations
