Psoriasis

Living with psoriasis is a challenge. Proper treatment of psoriasis can help control flare-ups and help patients be more comfortable.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a scaly and itchy rash. Doctors believe that psoriasis is caused by an immune system problem. Psoriasis can affect children and adults, but it is most common in adults.

People who have psoriasis can develop joint pain and inflammation. This is known as psoriatic arthritis.

Often psoriasis is diagnosed in the following skin areas:

  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Scalp
  • Lower back
  • Face
  • Palms

Is psoriasis contagious?

Psoriasis cannot be spread from person to person. It is not contagious.

The rash can come and go throughout life. Psoriasis can get worse with:

  • Infections
  • Certain medications
  • Stress
  • Dry skin
  • Too much sunlight

Home treatment for psoriasis

Bathe daily to clean the infected area and soothe inflammation. Moisturize your skin, and drink lots of fluids. Sunlight can help, but overexposure can trigger psoriasis.

Contact your dermatologist or primary care provider if you believe you could have psoriasis.

Psoriasis screening and diagnosis

Psoriasis looks like other skin diseases, so it is a good idea to make an appointment with your provider or dermatologist. A skin sample can be viewed under a microscope to confirm psoriasis.

Psoriasis treatment

Psoriasis can be treated with direct application of ointments, creams and gels. Other treatments include ultraviolet light therapy and prescription medication for extreme cases.
