Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure in which a patient's large bowel (colon and rectum) is examined using a scope. It is used to diagnose and treat, when possible, certain diseases of the lower GI tract. In the colon, polyps can be removed through the scope to prevent the development of colon cancer.  It is also used to treat certain diseases, such as bleeding from diverticula or other lesions.

Colonoscopies are performed by the SMHC's Gastroenterology specialists in Biddeford and Sanford. To schedule an appointment please call 207-283-1427. If you have a colonoscopy appointment scheduled at SMHC, please view the instructions on how to prepare, FAQs, and the preparation checklist.
