Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a program for people with lung disease to learn about their condition by specially trained medical staff. Through monitored exercise, education, and the support of others, you can learn to improve your physical health and how to live well with COPD.
PR is a great way to start an exercise program while learning about your lung disease and how to best manage your symptoms. Most programs follow a nationally recognized-AACVPR plan that includes breathing exercises that reduce shortness of breath and energy-saving tips to improve your ability to do daily tasks. You'll receive tips to control stress and anxiety and help to quit smoking.
PR has been shown to improve your quality of life and your ability to care for yourself. It is usually covered by insurance-please check with your insurance carried to understand your coverage. By learning to manage your COPD symptoms, PR can allow you to do the things you like and reduce hospital stays.
Ask your doctor, nurse or respiratory therapist about a pulmonary rehabilitation program in your area. Learning about your lung disease and how to manage your symptoms will help you live a healthier life with COPD.
