NORTH CONWAY, NH - Mary DeVeau, RN MSM, was recently welcomed to the Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees by Board President Phil Davies and hospital CEO Scott McKinnon. DeVeau brings significant experience in the field of home health care as well as the perspective of a nurse and chief executive officer.

From 1997 to the end of last year, DeVeau served as President/CEO of Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, Concord, NH. She and her husband have been coming to the area since 1990 and moved here full-time in January.

“It’s been a great journey for us to finally settle in the Mount Washington Valley,” DeVeau said. She said she was interested in joining the hospital board after having worked with CEO McKinnon through the New Hampshire Hospital Association’s Foundation for Healthy Communities.

“Everyone in health care understands that there is significant change underway. The emphasis now is on patient centered care, and how the various services of the system need to come together to support that effort.” She added that the “delivery of health care” is only a small part of “health”.

DeVeau began her professional career as a Registered Nurse, working in the cardio-thoracic surgical ICU at New England Medical Center for nearly 10 years. When offered an opportunity to take part in the startup of a home infusion service for All Care Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Lynn, Mass., DeVeau transitioned from acute care to home care.

It was a time when a patient’s length of stay in the hospital began to decrease while emphasis grew on providing care at home. During the past 25 years, DeVeau says she has worked diligently to ensure that the community based system of care -- home health, hospice and community education services -- are of the highest quality and available to all.

In 1993, DeVeau completed her master’s in health service management, and has served on many boards including the Home Care Association of New Hampshire and Visiting Nurse Association of America. She is the current chair of the Foundation for Healthy Communities and serves as a senior consultant for Helms & Company. In 2010, New Hampshire Business Reviewnamed DeVeau one of its “Outstanding Women in Business.”

Despite the challenges, DeVeau sees a significant new tool in how the health care system addresses the growing challenge of caring for the chronically ill. “For the first time, there is real data being collected in the field. It’s what’s needed to help us with predictive planning for the future.”
