On the Go Hair Designs Donates to Support SMHC Breast Care Patients

January 20, 2017
On the Go Hair Designs raised $1,250 during their 5th annual Cut-A-Thon in support of the Center for Breast Care at Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC).

“We are so excited to receive this donation,” said SMHC’s Breast Nurse Navigator Helene Langley, RN, BS, CBCN, CN-BN. “The funding enables us to offer educational materials, social work services, shattered projects, programs such as yoga, and other complementary therapies such as lymphedema massage and acupuncture. Without community support and donations, we wouldn’t be able to provide these valuable services to the women in our community afflicted by breast cancer. We are very thankful to On the Go Hair Designs.”

The salon’s largest fundraiser to date took place on October 22, 2016, during downtown Saco’s Pumpkin Harvest Festival. Salon staff donated their time providing haircuts and pink streaks in order to benefit local breast cancer patients receiving care. On the Go Hair Designs holds this event each October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease.

When asked why she holds the event, Heather Prejean, owner of On the Go Hair Designs, referred to her friend Michelle, who is a Breast Cancer survivor. Heather said, “Michelle’s mother, Ann, passed away just after Michelle had been diagnosed. Both were clients of mine, and I wanted to honor them and the many more that do not give up and fight. They have made such an impact on my life, and I wear a pin in support of these ladies that have been diagnosed. There are 15 names on the pin, and every year it seems I need to add another name or two. Each story is different, yet the struggles seem to coincide.”
