At the Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) Auxiliary Annual Meeting, President Denise LaRoche announced the 2017 Carolyn Walker Auxiliary Scholarship for Employee Recognition winners. Kaitlyn McCarter, athletic trainer, and Jason Swasey, risk management specialist, were each chosen to receive the $1,000 scholarship for 2017. Now in its seventh year, the scholarship was established to assist with expenses and tuition from enrollment in an accredited post-secondary course of study.
"It is always our great honor and pleasure to award the Carolyn F. Walker Auxiliary Scholarships for Employee Recognition to two worthy employee recipients who are furthering their knowledge and skills," said Auxiliary President Denise LaRoche. "When we encourage and reward those who seek to better themselves, everyone in our hospital community benefits, and that was Carolyn’s vision when she established the Auxiliary Scholarship seven years ago. We are dedicated to continuing her good work and legacy by presenting Kate McCarter and Jason Swasey with scholarships this year and look forward to preserving our tradition of giving back to our community." LaRoche also expressed her gratitude to Auxilians Sharon Roberge, Jennifer Paige and Karen Chasse for their service on the Scholarship Committee.
Kaitlyn McCarter, athletic trainer in the SMHC Sports Performance Center, has been employed with SMHC since 2015. Kaitlyn graduated from the University of New England (UNE) and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in applied nutrition. Kaitlyn is also a certified athletic trainer, and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. Kaitlyn volunteers at the Shipyard Half Marathon/Marathon, and gives talks about concussion management at UNE and in the community.
Jason Swasey, risk management specialist, has been employed by SMHC for nine years. He is a Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) instructor, Gemba coach, and Lean Six Sigma green belt. Jason was also named SMHC’s Rock Star of the Year in 2015. Jason graduated summa cum laude from Husson University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in business administration from Southern New Hampshire University. Jason hopes to attain his project management professional certification and his Lean Six Sigma black belt after graduation.
In accepting their scholarships, the recipients were deeply grateful for the financial assistance given to them by the Auxiliary in order to continue their studies. They were thankful for the Auxiliary’s confidence in them and are excited to pursue the next levels of their respective goals in education.
