Panel will discuss proposal to unify with MaineHealth

For the past eight months, the member organizations of MaineHealth, to which Southern Maine Health Care belongs, have been in preliminary discussions about reorganizing themselves under a single Board of Trustees and combined financial structure.

Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) is hosting two Public Forums to have a conversation with the communities it serves about the proposed "unification." A panel comprised of SMHC President and CEO Edward McGeachey; SMHC SVP and Chief Medical Officer Michael Albaum, MD; SMHC Board Chairman Ted Hissong and MaineHealth President William Caron will talk about the benefits of unification and address questions from the audience.

Forums are being held in Biddeford and Springvale on the following dates:

  • July 13
    Nasson Gym
    457 Main Street, Springvale
    6:00 p.m.

  • July 18
    SMHC Medical Center
    1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford
    2nd floor Classrooms
    6:00 p.m.

The proposal under discussion would create a single, system-wide Board of Trustees for MaineHealth. It would also leave in place local boards that would retain significant responsibility for the hospital services and other care delivered locally. MaineHealth and SMHC are interested in hearing from members of the community before any decisions are made. For more information about MaineHealth’s unification dialogue visit
