Southern Maine Health Care’s (SMHC) mission is to improve the health and health care of the communities we serve. We are pleased to offer the following health education programs during the month of October:

Cancer Care   

Breast Cancer Forum
Join SMHC’s team of Breast Cancer medical experts for a discussion about the latest developments in breast cancer treatments and reconstruction options. Presenters will be:

Annual Breast Cancer Survivors Celebration Tea
Southern Maine Health Care is inviting all breast cancer survivors and their families to attend SMHC’s annual Breast Cancer Survivor Tea; to honor those who have overcome the challenges of breast cancer.  The tea, which is held each October during Breast Cancer Awareness month, gives survivors an opportunity to share their stories and celebrate their triumphs. Special tea cups will decorate the room and refreshments will be served.

Macrobiotics Natural Foods Cooking Class
Macrobiotics is a natural approach to health and sickness. A macrobiotic diet consists of whole foods and cooking techniques brimming with health giving qualities. Should you be facing a serious illness or simply looking for better health, we encourage you to explore the possibilities. Presented by Macrobiotic Master Chef Connie Arnold.

The Painted Book – Art to Heal
Individuals with a history of cancer or currently in treatment, and their caregiver, are invited to partake in this artistic experience to explore your personal cancer journey. Creative writing, visual imagery and art journal techniques will be used to create a painted book that tells your story.

Tuesdays in October (3, 10, 17, 24), 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Childbirth Education

Safe Baby - Infant Safety & Infant/Toddler CPR
This class provides a non-certificate course by the American Heart Association to family and friends, as well as basic home safety for your baby as they grow.

Third Thursday of each month (October 12), 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Location: SMHC Medical Center, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford
Cost: $35/couple; $20/person.

Classes/Events

Adult Day Services for Alzheimer’s & Dementia – Sanford
SMHC’s Adult Day Service Program promotes the well-being of people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Participants enjoy different activities in a therapeutic environment designed to maximize their current abilities. For the caregiver, the Adult Day Service Program offers support and education, as well as a break from the responsibility of providing 24-hour care.

Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Total Joint Replacement Education Class
Designed for those considering total joint replacement. Participants will learn what to expect before, during and after their procedure and stay in the hospital. Open to anyone interested.

First Thursday (October 5), 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and third Thursday (July 20), 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Weight Loss Surgery Information Session
Is weight loss surgery the right decision for you? Have you tried the other weight loss methods and nothing seems to work? If you're considering weight loss surgery, then this introductory class is for you. Information will be presented about nutrition, resources, and other topics to help with the lifestyle and emotional adjustments you may face.

Second Wednesday of each month (October 11), 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Smoking Cessation Sessions
There’s never been a better time to quit.
Southern Maine Health Care offers a smoking cessation program involving one-on-one sessions designed to offer the tobacco user all the information and tools required to become tobacco free.  The Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist will offer insights into smoking habits, stress and the relationship it has to smoking, as well as nicotine replacement options available. Ongoing support is also valuable in guiding the tobacco user to become tobacco free.

Support Groups

Alzheimer’s Support Group
Open to anyone that has a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or any form of dementia. The group helps participants understand the process of the disease and allows for sharing and questions. Those attending the daytime support group are able to bring their loved one with them who will attend the Pavilion’s Activity group during the support group. The group is supported by the Alzheimer Association of Maine.

First Wednesday of each month (October 4), 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and third Wednesday (September 20), 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Cancer Support Group - Saco
We welcome those affected by cancer and their family/friends. Support, information, and networking will be provided by skilled facilitators.

Fourth Monday of each month (October 16), 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
