The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration awards Maine Medical Center’s organ transplant program Platinum Recognition

PORTLAND, Maine – The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) – Division of Transplantation has awarded Maine Medical Center’s organ transplant program Platinum Recognition for its commitment to increasing awareness around the need for organ and tissue donors. This is the highest national recognition possible by HRSA through its Workplace for Life campaign. MMC was the only hospital in Maine to achieve Platinum status.

MMC’s transplant rates are among the highest in New England. Since 2016, 49 people have donated their organs through MMC, leading to dozens of transplants. To help build awareness, MMC holds a number of events throughout the year to recognize both living and deceased donors. This work has made more local organs available to patients on the transplant list.

“This award is a testament to not only the phenomenal work of Maine Medical Center leadership and staff in supporting lifesaving organ and tissue donation, but also to the strong collaboration between our hospital and the New England Organ Bank,” said Ardyce Peters, Director of Transplant Services at Maine Medical Center.

Just one organ donor can save up to nine lives, and one tissue donor can improve the lives of 50 people. In 2016, the hospitals that make up New England Donor Services saved more than 1,000 lives.
