SMHC Names Caregiver of the Year and Rock Star of the Year at Annual Employee Recognition Event

At Southern Maine Health Care’s (SMHC) Annual Employee Recognition event, Igor Prokopiw, M.D. of SMHC Gastroenterology in Biddeford was named Caregiver of the Year and Communications and Design Specialist Diana Chapman was named the Rock Star of the Year. Both Prokopiw and Chapman are valuable members of the SMHC team that exude SMHC’s core values: Patient Centered, Respect, Integrity, Excellence, Ownership and Innovation.

"To be chosen for the Caregiver of the Year award, the recipient must not only be a champion of clinical and relationship excellence at SMHC, but they must also share these gifts through involvement in their professional field and in our community," noted SMHC’s Chief Medical Officer Mike Albaum, M.D. "Dr. Igor Prokopiw is a highly-trained physician, dedicated to medicine. He is known as a go-to person who is always willing to assist his fellow physicians and staff. Dr. Prokopiw goes above and beyond to make time for his patients and their families, often calling patients in the evening to check on them after a procedure. Dr. Prokopiw has been the Champion Leader for creating workflows for SMHC Gastroenterology in MaineHealth’s electronic health record system, Epic. He is highly regarded for treating others with compassion and respect. I am pleased to honor him with the 2017 Caregiver of the Year award."

Prokopiw is an associate professor in the department of Medicine at University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford. He is fellowship trained in medical research and a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Maine Gastroenterology Society, the American Medical Association, the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology and the Ontario Medical Association. Prokowpiw is a consultant in Gastroenterology and a member of the attending staff at Mercy Hospital and Maine Medical Center. He is also medical director of the Portland Celiac Disease Support Group and a consultant in Gastroenterology at New England Rehabilitation Hospital. Prokopiw graduated with honors from University of Toronto Medical School and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at University of Alberta and his residency and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Queen’s University.

The Caregiver of the Year award is chosen from among nominations received based upon patient comments and peer recommendations throughout the organization. The recipient must meet the following criteria: exemplify extraordinary commitment to patients on a daily basis; show compassion, empathy and respect in the delivery of care to patients and their families; acknowledge and meet the unique physical, emotional and practical needs of patients and their families and; promote an environment of cooperation and collaboration in which the expertise and experience of all healthcare professionals are available to patients.

She is the person we look to to get things done when they are complex and require lots of communications. Diana is always willing to step up and help anyone, and she always exceeds our expectations with a smile. Diana is Rock Star of the Year for 2017 because she goes the extra, extra mile to keep the staff informed with poise and grace. We value her dedication, skill and talent."
