First Lady was an advocate for children’s health, namesake of The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital
PORTLAND, Maine — Maine Medical Center recognizes the passing of first lady Barbara Bush, a beloved member of the MMC family and namesake of The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center.
“We all stood a little taller because we were associated with Mrs. Bush. Her unwavering support for children’s health and deep commitment to the hospital that bears her name moved many to share her passion and improve the health of our state’s youngest and most vulnerable patients,” said Rich Petersen, MMC President and CEO. “She connected with every child and family member she met during her many visits to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. Many of those children have grown to be healthy adults and still treasure that connection. She was inspired by our care teams, and they were inspired by her passion and dedication. We will all miss her greatly.”
Mrs. Bush and her husband, President George H.W. Bush, joined MMC on September 28, 1995 for the announcement that Maine’s only children’s hospital would be named in honor of first lady Barbara Bush. Since then, both have been important members of the Maine Medical Center family, and The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital has been among their most passionate causes.
“It is so very important to have a children’s hospital here in Maine,” Mrs. Bush said during the naming ceremony in 1995. “Children are society’s most precious asset, and their care must be among our highest priorities.”
“Barbara Bush had a passion for improving the health and wellbeing of children everywhere. By lending her name she helped elevate the importance of children’s health in the eyes of Mainers. She was a leader in every sense of the word and her passion and commitment will continue on in the hearts and the talents of the doctors and nurses who work and support this important mission,” said former MMC Board of Trustees Chair Owen Wells who is also a close friend of the Bush family.
The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital is part of Maine Medical Center. It is Maine’s only children’s hospital and is dedicated to enhancing the lives of children through excellence in patient care, research and education. With more than 85 pediatric specialists serving more than 100,000 annual patient visits, The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital provides care across the spectrum in a state-of-the-art facility that creates a safe, nurturing and educational environment for patients and families.
Mrs. Bush’s daughter-in-law, Margaret Bush, who is the wife of Marvin Bush, is a member of the Maine Medical Center Board of Trustees, carrying on the legacy of family support and involvement with the hospital.
