Play Inspired by Patient's Experience at Southern Maine Health Care to Premiere in Portland

October 22, 2018

A dramatic new play, Timeline, will premiere at The Portland Ballet Studio Theater on November 9, 2018. Created by Maine resident Deborah Anderson and co-written with Roland H. Robinson, the production is based on her life and experiences receiving care at Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC).

Timeline follows the odyssey of a middle-aged woman participating in individual therapy sessions. Facilitated by her doctor, these sessions provide an ideal environment for her to explore childhood memories, adult-related milestones, and the inevitability of death. Sessions are replete with humor, vulnerability and an exploration of pathways to healing.

Born the youngest of nine to older parents, Deborah experienced more than her share of childhood trauma. Her mother had a first heart attack when Deb was only four. Her father was an alcoholic. At the age of seven she witnessed her mom’s second heart attack.

Deborah was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and became insulin dependent at the age of nine. One year later her youngest brother was killed in a car accident. The effects of these traumatic episodes on young Deb are explained in the play, together with additional adult trauma experienced in later life.

To recognize and thank the SMHC professionals that have helped Deborah manage her health issues these past few years, a portion of ticket sales for the November 10 performance will benefit Southern Maine Health Care. Please visit for additional information.
