Memorial Hospital to Offer Safe Sitter Class

December 11, 2019
NORTH CONWAY, NH – Teens in Mt. Washington Valley can once again locally receive comprehensive babysitting training, including CPR through the Safe Sitter® course. The one day class is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on December 30 at Memorial Hospital, in the Intervale Conference Room, on the second floor of the Physical Therapy Building.

The Safe Sitter® class is designed to help students in grades 6 to 8 prevent injuries and handle emergencies when home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting. Classes include CPR, safety training, how to run a babysitting business, and how to handle issues in online and cellphone communication.

The cost is $50 per student, and scholarships are available for those who cannot otherwise afford to attend. The course is taught by Memorial Hospital nursing staff, including Linda Taylor, Pam Bormann and Dawn Landers.

The class is limited to 10 participants. Early registration is highly recommended and can be found online at

Memorial Hospital is a Registered Safe Sitter® Teaching Site. Safe Sitter® aims to reduce the number of avoidable and unintentional deaths among children being cared for by young teen caretakers. The program follows American Heart Association standards for rescue skills and instruction in first aid techniques from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The nationally-recognized program was developed by pediatrician Dr. Patricia Keener after a colleague’s toddler choked to death while in the care of an adult sitter who didn’t know what to do. Students who complete a Safe Sitter® course gain confidence and learn how, why, and where injuries can happen so they can be prevented. They are taught infant and child choking rescue and CPR. They also learn how a child’s age affects the care they receive, how to prevent problem behavior, how to run their own babysitting business, and issues in online and cellphone safety.

Students who graduate from a Safe Sitter® course receive a completion card that demonstrates they know how to use their skills in situations they encounter.
