Billing Process: Who pays for what?

Here is a quick summary of the billing process for patients with and without insurance. This will help you understand your Patient Statement when it arrives.

  • If you have no health insurance, your first statement will say that we are billing you for services provided. If you cannot pay your bill, look for information on your statement about the programs available to help you  pay your hospital bills.
  • If you have health insurance, MaineHealth will bill your health insurance for the services provided to you.

When all insurers have paid their portion of the claim, you will receive a consolidated statement from MaineHealth identifying insurance payments and any balance due from you. Insurance providers may have different levels of benefits and coverage based on services rendered and place/type of service.

Your insurer may contact you

Your insurance company may send you a request for some additional information, such as a Coordination of Benefits questionnaire. If you do not provide your insurance company with this additional information, you may be billed for the entire balance of the claim.

You may receive additional bills

You may also receive bills from other healthcare providers. For example, you may be billed by a provider who is not part of the MaineHealth system, such as the anesthesiologist or the radiologist who reads your X-rays. If you have questions about these bills, please contact the provider who rendered these services.

Contact us

Medical student enjoys rural practice at LincolnHealth

In July, Tufts University School of Medicine student Sarah Liu assisted the birth of a baby for the first time with Certified Nurse Midwife Bridget Buck at LincolnHealth. Two weeks later she saw the mother and baby for a follow-up appointment with Dr. Joann Kaplan, a Lincoln Medical Partners pediatrician, and later on she saw the mother at the Women’s Center for her postpartum visit.
If Liu were in a traditional medical school program, she most likely would have never seen those patients again.
