Biography

I joined the staff at Maine Medical Center in 1992 as a fellowship-trained trauma and critical care surgeon and, with Dr. David Clark, helped develop Maine’s first state trauma system. With the development of laparoscopic general surgery techniques in the 1990s, though, my focus and professional passion switched to advanced videoscopic surgery and other minimally invasive surgical techniques related to non-cancerous conditions of the esophagus and stomach (including bariatric surgery). I helped create MMC’s multidisciplinary Weight and Wellness Program in 2001 and have done over 2200 laparoscopic bariatric (weight-loss) operations since then.

I enjoy offering my patients alternatives to conventional open surgery, including laparoscopic & robotic surgery, avoiding a hospital stay in many cases while achieving similar or better results. I have performed over 2700 laparoscopic/robotic anti-reflux (GERD) operations & hiatal hernia repairs, over 250 laparoscopic/robotic Heller myotomies for achalasia, and over 140 transoral Zenker’s diverticulum repairs (without neck incision). Focusing on the upper GI tract and doing just a few operations (but doing them very often) helps me comfortably handle complex revisional, redo, and other challenging situations that arise in my specialty, including removing Lap-Bands and converting them to gastric bypass (and occasionally sleeve gastrectomy) during one operation.

I have two grown sons with my wife, Linda, a board-certified anesthesiologist. I hold a private pilot license with a seaplane rating but only look skyward and talk about flying these days. I enjoy downhill skiing, sailboarding and playing musical instruments badly when I make the time.
