Every Friday night, Mike Knof and his wife Darcy have a special “date night” where they take care of their 2-year-old granddaughter, Raylin. On Friday, April 27, 2018, Mike met his daughter at the grocery store in Damariscotta to do some shopping and pick up Ray. While talking with a local friend in the dairy aisle, Mike experienced a complete cardiac arrest and immediately fell to the ground. Amazingly, several local neighbors who knew Mike came to his immediate assistance and began performing chest compressions (CPR) to get his heart beating again. These people included a LincolnHealth clinical manager, a local off-duty deputy and another EMT who was the girlfriend of the man he was talking with when he collapsed, in other words, his neighbors.
Mike vaguely remembers being transported in an ambulance to the LincolnHealth –Miles campus in Damariscotta as technicians worked to resuscitate him. Once at LincolnHealth the ER team worked to stabilize him and quickly transport Mike to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Although his heart stopped beating several times more on the ambulance ride, he arrived at MMC where an entire cardiac team checked for a blockage and realized that his heart had stopped repeatedly. They performed emergency cardiac surgery on Mike, inserting a state-of-the-art defibrillator. His teaching team included doctors who collectively had over 140 years of experience, drawing on both the newest cardiac knowledge and the finest medical experience available.
When Mike woke up, his nurse explained what had happened to him and where he was. Mike described the extreme care and compassion that his entire team showed him during his 4-day stay in the Intensive Care Unit. His team worked to manage his pain and get him on the road to recovery. Once at home, Mike received treatment and support from his LincolnHealth primary care providers and his dedicated home health care team from MaineHealth Care at Home.
Just a few months since his evening at Hannaford, Mike is able to get around independently and consider what he wants to do with his life. He is actively setting new FitBit goals walking and is spending all the time he can with family, especially Raylin.
