Our Vision Statement
Oxford Hills residents will be the healthiest people in Maine.
What We Stand For
The Healthy Oxford Hills coalition was assembled in the fall of 2000 as a means to action for individuals and organizations concerned about the health of residents of the Oxford Hills community. A five-year grant from the Maine Bureau of Health has allowed the coalition to address significant health threats to the Oxford Hills community including:
Together these diseases are responsible for approximately three-quarters of all of the deaths in this region. They have a major impact on our economy as a result of direct expenses for medical treatment and lost productivity for area businesses. At least forty percent of the deaths they cause can be attributed to a group of three related factors:
- Tobacco use
- Poor nutrition
- Physical inactivity
To combat these factors, Healthy Oxford Hills is working closely with other community partners to promote local programs that:
- Encourage more active lifestyles and healthier eating
- Help smokers quit and keep kids from starting to smoke
- Protect children and adults from the dangers of secondhand smoke
These programs include walking programs, anti-tobacco youth groups, and guest speakers and resources for teachers and students in local schools. The focus of the coalition is to create policies and environments that support a healthier lifestyle.
