Neuro Critical Care

The Neuroscience Center at Maine Medical Center offers expert care for people with injury and illness affecting the brain and spinal cord. Maine Medical Center has Maine’s only Level 1 trauma center, which has multi-disciplinary teams of clinicians who evaluate and treat critically ill patients.

What is neurocritical care?

Neurocritical care is the intensive care management of patients with life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical illnesses.

Neurocritical care integrates care for the brain and other organ systems in the setting of critical illness. Patients are taken care of within a single specialized unit.

Neurocritical care treats neurological and trauma conditions in adults and children. Some of these conditions include:

  • Traumatic spinal and brain injuries
  • Ischemic stroke
  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Seizures and status epilepticus
  • Meningitis
  • Neuromuscular weakness
  • Severe delirium
