What is geriatric medicine?
Geriatric medicine focuses on preventive care for older adults. MaineHealth geriatric medicine care providers have specialized training in caring for the unique needs of aging adults. The goal is to help older people manage their health and maintain their independence for as long as possible.
A geriatric assessment includes a comprehensive review of your physical health; cognitive and functional capabilities; lifestyle; medications: residential environment; and family/community supports. Your doctor will recommend a wellness plan that can help you avoid future illnesses and injuries as much as possible. They may also recommend specialty care or community services if needed.
What is a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit (AWV)?
The Medicare annual wellness visit is a free benefit that will help you make a plan with your health care team for how to stay healthy. During this annual visit, you will talk with your health care provider about your medical history, risk for certain diseases, the current state of your health, and create a personalized prevention plan.
