Implementing the National Diabetes Prevention Program

MaineHealth hospitals are working to increase access to and enrollment in the National Diabetes Prevention Program.

Recent U.S. CDC data estimates that approximately one out of three adults has prediabetes. Having prediabetes increases your chance of developing more serious health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Medical costs for people with diabetes are more than twice as high than for people without diabetes.

Diabetes has tripled in Maine between 1995 and 2010. Currently, 32,264 (3%) of Mainers have diabetes and don’t know it, and the impact on Mainers continues to grow.

The National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) is an evidence-based lifestyle intervention designed to prevent the delay or onset of type 2 diabetes through modest weight loss and increased physical activity.

MaineHealth hospitals are working to increase access to and enrollment in NDPP.

Tracking Progress

  • 100 percent of MaineHealth hospitals offered at least one Diabetes Prevention Program regionally (in 2018)
  • 17 Lifestyle Coaches were trained by MaineHealth Master Trainer (in 2018)
  • Participation in the program has increased more than 500% (from 7 participants in 2017 to 45 participants in 2018)
  • MaineHealth has achieved full CDC recognition in 2019 as a National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) service provider
  • 82 clinicians from Southern Maine Health Care received educational training on the NDPP to improve patient referrals to the program

About the National Diabetes Prevention Program
