MaineHealth Franklin Hospital Breast Care provides local access to advanced breast care services in Farmington and Livermore Falls, Maine. Services include state-of-the-art digital screening, diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasounds and cancer care.

Our multi-disciplinary team provides compassionate care in a comforting environment where patients get the results and support they need quickly.

A mammogram could save your life

Talk to your primary care provider about scheduling a mammogram. This simple test can detect the early stages of breast cancer, giving you time to get the care you need.

At MaineHealth Franklin Hospital Breast Care, digital mammograms are performed with advanced medical equipment and a board-certified radiologist interprets each exam. A care support nurse is available to personally guide each patient through the screening, diagnosis, and treatment process (if necessary).

We also offer 3D mammography. Benefits include:

  • Improved cancer detection rates
  • A decrease in call-backs for more images
  • The same or slightly lower x-ray dose than a regular digital mammogram
  • Covered by most insurances, including Medicare

About stereotactic needle biopsy

Stereotactic needle biopsy is a low-radiation, outpatient procedure that is an important tool in the fight against breast cancer. It is used to determine if breast abnormalities found on a mammogram are cancerous or benign.

Compared to surgery, stereotactic needle biopsy is quicker and less painful, has fewer complications and minimal recovery time, and only requires local anesthesia. Since most people with an abnormal mammogram do not have breast cancer, stereotactic needle biopsy can spare you the discomfort and scarring associated with a surgical biopsy.

We are a Level III: Certified Quality Breast Center, the highest certification from the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program.™ Our performance is measured by key indicators such as:

  • Timeliness of care from screening mammograms to diagnostic mammograms
  • Surgical timeliness of care from time between needle biopsy and initial breast surgery
  • Pathology report completeness

It’s important to talk to a health care provider about any changes to your breasts.

  • Swelling of all or part of the breast
  • Skin irritation or dimpling
  • Breast pain
  • Nipple pain or the nipple turning inward
