MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) interventional radiology (IR) residents have access to modern imaging equipment, procedure rooms, patient recovery and holding areas, and dedicated IR outpatient clinics, with space to permit the performance of all radiologic and IR procedures, including vascular and non-vascular invasive imaging and image-guided IR procedures broadly distributed over the domain of IR.

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center

  • There are three 256-slice dual-energy CT (DECT) scanners, two 64-slice DECT scanners, and one 64-slice multi-detector CT (MDCT) scanner with CT fluoroscopy.  All six scanners are equipped with dose reduction software.  The five DECT scanners are also equipped with metal artifact suppression software and advanced imaging techniques to reduce contrast load.
  • There are five MRI scanners – one 3T and four 1.5T.
  • A total of 14 ultrasound units include ten Philips iU22 units, one Philips CX50 with AcuNav ICE compatibility, one Philips Affiniti, and two Zonare Medical Systems units.  The latter four devices are dedicated to the interventional radiology (IR) suites.
  • Nuclear medicine equipment includes two Siemens Symbia S SPECT, two Siemens Symbia Intevo 2 SPECT/CT units, and a Siemens Biograph 6 PET/CT.
  • Fluoroscopy has three conventional, low-dose Philips fluoroscopic units with pulsed fluoroscopy and video imaging capability, which are ideal for all applications including pediatrics.  A remotely operated fluoroscopic unit is well-suited for special studies such as bariatrics, speech swallows, and defecography.
  • IR has two single-plane and one biplane Siemens Artis Zee suites, all of which include the most recent software such as cone beam CT. In addition, there is a multipurpose room in Fluoroscopy that can be used for minor procedures such as tube changes.
  • The general radiology rooms are all equipped for DR.
  • There are five ACR-accredited mammography units, one of which is equipped for upright stereo biopsies, and one prone stereotactic mammographic biopsy unit.
  • There is a seven-bed radiology care unit (“RadCU North”) dedicated to the preparation, holding, and recovery of outpatients treated in IR. An additional seven beds in adjacent RadCU South are dedicated to Advanced Endoscopy, but can be used for IR overflow.  Patients on whom procedures are performed with general anesthesia are recovered in either RadCU or PACU.  Inpatients receiving IR procedures under moderate sedation are recovered in their rooms.

St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center

  • Two 64-slice GE Optima 660 CT scanners, one with fluoroscopy.
  • One 1.5T Siemens Altea scanner.
  • Four GE Logic E-10 ultrasound units for diagnostic exams, and one Zonare unit for image-guided procedures.
  • One Siemens Symbia nuclear medicine SPECT/CT unit.
  • One Canon Infinix IR suite.
  • The St. Mary’s Center for Vascular Care has two patient exam rooms, one equipped for minor procedures.
  • One Sonail Vision remote fluoroscopy suite with bariatric capability.
  • IR patient recovery and holding occurs in the Outpatient Department.

Boston Children’s Hospital

  • The Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) Department of Pediatric Radiology has the most sophisticated imaging equipment available in CT, EOS, fetal imaging, fluoroscopy, MRI, nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, PET, ultrasound, and x-ray.
  • The Division of Pediatric Interventional Radiology is housed in a dedicated suite with three DSA rooms (two with biplane).
  • BCH has a four-bed pre-op/recovery area for IR, two examination rooms, and an eight-bed PACU that is shared with MRI.

Spectrum Healthcare Partners Vascular & Interventional Physicians IR Clinic

  • Two patient exam rooms, one equipped for minor procedures.
  • One Zonare ultrasound unit.
  • One AngioDynamics VenaCure EVLT device.
  • The facility that houses the Spectrum Healthcare Partners (SHCP) IR Clinic contains an Ambulatory Surgery Center and PACU, but procedures requiring sedation are not currently performed at the SHCP IR Clinic.

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center
The MHMMC Dept. of Radiology performs over 200,000 diagnostic imaging studies every year, which include approximately 35,000 CT scans, 23,000 ultrasounds, and 13,000 MRI exams.  Vascular diagnosis procedures include over 10,000 CT and MR angiograms and noninvasive arterial physiologic studies. There are nearly 6,000 IR procedures per year, which consist of nearly 1,900 angiograms, over 1,200 arterial vascular interventions, nearly 600 venous vascular interventions, and over 2,100 non-vascular interventions.

St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center
Every year, this institution performs over 1,200 CT and MR angiograms and noninvasive arterial physiologic studies.  There are nearly 600 IR procedures per year, which consist of nearly 60 angiograms, 200 arterial vascular interventions, 80 venous vascular interventions, and over 300 non-vascular interventions.

Boston Children’s Hospital
The BCH Dept. of Radiology performs nearly 800 CT and MR angiograms and noninvasive arterial physiologic studies every year. There are over 2,100 IR procedures per year, which consist of over 200 angiograms, nearly 300 arterial vascular interventions, over 50 venous vascular interventions, and nearly 1,600 non-vascular interventions.

SHCP Vascular & Interventional Physicians IR Clinic
Every year, this facility performs nearly 160 non-vascular interventions.

The MHMMC IR attending physicians are employees of Spectrum Healthcare Partners, which is a large physician-owned, multi-specialty healthcare organization located in Maine. MHMMC IR residents rotate at the freestanding SHCP Vascular & Interventional Physicians IR Clinic for one day per week during their MHMMC and St. Mary’s IR rotations in PGY 2-6.  In addition, they spend a dedicated month at this clinic each year in PGY 5-6.  This clinic is located five minutes from MHMMC - Portland.  All MHMMC IR attendings rotate coverage of this clinic daily.

Approximately one-half of every day is spent in a hospital-based IR clinic during the St. Mary’s IR rotation. MHMMC IR residents rotate at St. Mary’s for 2-4 weeks per year in PGY 2-4, and 6-8 weeks per year in PGY 5-6. This facility is located 50 minutes from MHMMC-Portland, in Lewiston, ME.  Several MMC IR attendings rotate coverage of St. Mary’s daily.

Finally, there is some clinic exposure during the Pediatric IR rotation at Boston Children’s Hospital in PGY-6.

Outpatient clinical activities include approximately 900 new patient visits and 1,000 follow-up visits every year.  Inpatient clinical activities at MHMMC include approximately 200 hospital admissions and 1,500 inpatient consultations every year.  Four IR advanced practice providers at MHMMC help to manage the inpatient clinical service.
