Adolescent Medicine

Adolescent medicine is a primary care service of MaineHealth. Our MaineHealth providers keep our adolescent and young adult patients healthy, while ensuring that their unique physical, mental, and emotional needs are met. MaineHealth providers encourage patients to be actively involved in their healthcare.

What is adolescent and young adult medicine?

Adolescent and young adult medicine is a primary care service specifically for adolescent, pre-teen, and teenage patients, generally between 12 and 19 years old. Because patients in this age range may have complex health conditions, adolescent and young adult medicine also includes specialized care.

Are you looking for a primary care provider who specializes in adolescent and young adult medicine? Talk to your child’s pediatrician or provider. Often, family practices have providers who specialize in working with patients in this age group.

How often are wellness exams recommended?

We encourage our patients to visit us once a year for a wellness and physical exam. Of course, if there are signs or symptoms of an illness -- or if a teenage patient has a chronic illness -- you can make appointments more often.

MaineHealth providers will meet with our adolescent and young adult patients to make sure that they are healthy and developing properly. Physical exams may include some or all of the following:

  • Measure height and weight
  • Check blood pressure
  • Give booster shots to stay up to date on immunizations
  • Examine teeth and mouth
  • Test eyesight and hearing
  • Talk about risks of drugs, alcohol and sexual behavior
  • Screen for sexually transmitted infections, as necessary
  • Ask about any potential social or emotional problems
