Tobacco Use Prevention and Treatment
The Tobacco Treatment Training & Education program provides training for all healthcare professionals on evidence-based tobacco treatment. Emphasis is placed on helping professionals gain the knowledge and skills needed to engage their patients and clients who use tobacco; and to develop individualized quit plans as they are attempt to quit. The training program is nationally accredited as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification Program.
Healthcare professional training options:
- Event Training includes: a 1-day Basic Skills, a 2-day Intensive Skills on delivering tobacco treatment intervention, and a 2-day Annual Tobacco Treatment conference with nationally recognized speakers
- Healthcare clinician outreach (at no charge) includes: virtual training including options including: videos and webinars, on site clinician in-services, and phone based systems support or technical assistance

MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence (CTI) promotes evidence based tobacco treatments across the MaineHealth system through consultation and technical assistance to providers and clinical staff. MaineHealth member hospitals offer tobacco counseling to MaineHealth member hospitals offer tobacco counseling for inpatients and outpatients that use tobacco and support tobacco-free campus policies in an effort to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all.
CTI works with MaineHealth system hospitals and practices to integrate referrals to the Maine Tobacco HelpLine into electronic health records (eHR). The goal is to increase the number of patients screened for tobacco use and offered evidence-based tobacco treatment services. Embedding tobacco quitline referrals into an eHR increases referrals to evidence-based tobacco treatment, and improves the quality of referrals when paired with onsite-training, performance feedback, and technical assistance. CTI conducts ongoing performance improvement activities using enhanced academic detailing techniques to drive tobacco intervention improvements across the MaineHealth system.
CTI manages the MaineHealth employee tobacco treatment program called Quit For Life® (collaboration between the American Cancer Society and Optum). Quit for Life® is the nation’s leading phone-based tobacco cessation program. It employs an evidence-based combination of physical, psychological and behavioral strategies to enable participants to take responsibility for and overcome their addiction to tobacco use. The program provides an integrated mix of medication support, phone-based cognitive behavioral coaching and web-based learning and support tools to help quit tobacco.
