MaineHealth Peer Support Program

What is a peer support program?

The MaineHealth peer support program is based on national models designed to help medical staff address career challenges. Medical staff may self-refer to the program or be referred by a concerned colleague. Conversations are completely voluntary and confidential. Medical staff who choose to participate work with trained colleagues are available to provide peer-to-peer support.

Why does MaineHealth offer a peer support program?

Medical staff burnout can cause adverse physical and mental symptoms and a sense of isolation. It's important to know that you do not have to cope on your own. Burnout may not only affect medical staff, but also co-workers, patients and families.

Our goal is to prevent or reduce medical staff distress and burnout related to the workplace. No event is too small for peer support. If you are stressed, worried or just need to talk, support is available for any reason.

Who are the peer supporters?

Medical staff peer supporters are trained volunteers from many regions across MaineHealth. They are your colleagues.

What if I want to talk to someone more anonymously?

You can contact peersupport@mainehealth.org and request support outside your community or local hospital system.

Is it confidential?

Yes, it is a confidential one-to-one discussion. The supporter does not take notes or discuss your conversation with anyone else. The only time a peer supporter would bring in more help is if there were concern for your safety.

What do we talk about?

Supporters can help you be aware of how you are coping and provide perspective. It can be reassuring to know that all medical staff have been or will be faced with these situations. They can also suggest a variety of resources if needed.
