Residency Practice Sites
Residents do their inpatient rotations at MMC and select either the Portland or Falmouth clinics as their primary clinic site at which they see their continuity patients. There are also a variety of other educational settings, including Falmouth By The Sea Nursing Home, University of Southern Maine student health clinic, and the offices of many local specialists.
Maine Medical Center
Maine Medical Center is a unique institution. It is a 637-bed non-profit teaching hospital and while it is the main center for tertiary care in the state of Maine, it functions and has the feel of a community hospital. This allows our residents to see an amazing variety of common disorders as well as more unique conditions.
Maine Medical Center has recently partnered with Tufts University to create the first allopathic medical school in Maine. This partnership, along with a partnership with the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, demonstrates MMC’s commitment to medical education. We have 18 accredited residency programs and fellowships, affording a great educational experience among residents and students.
Portland Family Medicine Center
In the heart of Portland’s East End, the Portland Family Medicine Center originally opened in 1974 and was rebuilt in 1999. The building is home to 15 residents, 8 faculty, and our sports medicine department and fellowship.
The Portland site has traditionally provided care to the area’s urban underserved population, which is increasingly becoming much more ethnically diverse, but also draws patients from broader geographic and socioeconomic areas. Many of our ethnically diverse patients come to us from east Africa (Somalia is very well-represented) and the Middle East. Interpreter services are available for the myriad languages spoken. On site, we offer social workers, a psychiatrist, lab and x-ray services, and a Learning Resource Center which provides patients with education and resources about their health.
Family Medicine Center, Falmouth
Located 5 miles from downtown Portland, Falmouth is the suburb just north of the city. Our Family Medicine Center in Falmouth is a bit different than the Portland site in that it shares office space with other medical offices, including internal medicine, pediatrics, and orthopedics.
The Falmouth site houses 6 residents and 7 faculty and serves a varied patient population, including urban and rural underserved as well as middle-class patients. Similar to our Portland site, we offer social work, lab and x-ray services, and a Learning Resource Center in Falmouth.
