Teaching Conferences

The following Teaching Conferences are a vital part of our training program (note that due to COVID-19 some conferences are held virtually)

  • Morning Report is a definite favorite among residents and faculty is a one-hour conference held four days per week in Internal Medicine and in Pediatrics (5th day is Grand Rounds for each department). Residents discuss current cases and focus on differential diagnosis, evaluation, management, and cost-effective decision-making. Many generalists and specialists also attend morning report, lending their expertise.
  • Intern Report is a conference aimed at improving interns' presentation and clinical decision-making skills, is led by the chief residents weekly in Internal Medicine.
  • Work Rounds are conducted daily on the Internal Medicine and the Pediatric inpatient teams and are led by the senior residents and include Attending Rounds with bed-side teaching
  • Grand Rounds are held once weekly in both Internal Medicine and in Pediatrics. These conferences bring together a wide academic and community provider population. MMC attracts local, national, and international speakers. Topics are applicable to both primary care and subspecialty medicine. Dedicated Med-Peds Grand Rounds occur quarterly. All Med-Peds and Pediatric residents in their final year present a Grand Rounds on a topic of interest.
  • Morbidity and Mortality Conference occurs at least once each month in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. These conferences are centered on patient safety events and near misses and needed program and systems related to the cases. All residents present an M&M for Internal Medicine and for Pediatrics.
  • Journal Club is held monthly in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and quarterly for Med-Peds. Med-Peds residents are expected to present at these sessions once during residency. The quarterly Med-Peds Journal Clubs are held in the evenings. Residents have an opportunity to review the articles with statisticians/epidemiologist.
  • The Internal Medicine Didactics occurs every Friday afternoon for two and a half hours, providing a carefully selected curriculum of primary care and subspecialty topics. This is protected time with faculty and fellows covering patient care.
  • Pediatric Didactics occur every Thursday morning for two hours and are led by Pediatric generalists and specialists. An 18-month curriculum is presented during this lecture series where the focus is on case-based presentations covering the breadth of pediatrics. This time is protected for residents with faculty covering patient care.
  • The Pediatric Primary Care Series occurs once per month during pediatric didactics and is based on the Johns Hopkins Primary Care Pediatric Curriculum. The series reviews fundamental primary care issues such as health supervision, vaccinations, nutrition, and scoliosis.
  • Internal Medicine-Pediatric Didactic occur once a month during Med-Peds weekly session time. The chief resident helps coordinate topics and presenters. The sessions are held at someone’s home (pre-COVID) or outdoors somewhere. The Med-Peds program covers dinner on didactic night to encourage attendance. The other weekly sessions include; check-in/rotation transition, wellness, journal club/cultural topic/diversity
  • Cross-Disciplinary Conferences on ethics, adolescent medicine, medical-legal issues, palliative care, med-psych, global health, and cultural competency are included as part of a cross-departmental curriculum organized cooperatively by the residencies at MMC.
  • Pediatrics Interprofessional Educational Sessions are weekly sessions that include talks pertinent to all of the members of the pediatrics team including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical/occupational therapists, speech therapists, and social workers.
