Maine Track

The Maine Track was founded with three primary goals in mind: to address the shortage of doctors in Maine, especially in our rural areas; to offer Maine’s brightest students the financial means to pursue a career in medicine; and to develop an innovative curriculum focused on community-based education.

This unique partnership between Tufts University School of Medicine and Maine Medical Center offers a rigorous training program for students committed to pursuing a career in rural medicine. The Maine Track’s innovative curriculum offers medical students clinical training experiences throughout Maine, exposing them to the unique aspects of rural practice, while also providing training at a major tertiary medical center. This approach creates more than just a pipeline of new physicians who want to practice in Maine; it lays the foundation for a future where every Mainer has access to excellent medical care, regardless of where in the state they live.

Scholarship support is essential for this program to function as it was intended. Each year, the Maine Track provides $2 million in tuition subsidies through outright and endowed scholarship funds to support 20 recipients in each class year. This financial assistance makes the cost of tuition comparable to an “in-state” rate allowing Maine Track scholarship recipients the flexibility to pursue a career in rural medicine instead of having their specialty choice be dictated by the burden of student debt.

Investment in the Future

Financial support of Maine Track scholarships is an investment in the future health of our state. Scholarships provide an opportunity for Maine’s best and brightest students to affordably pursue a rewarding medical career without leaving the state they love.

Here are ways you can support the Maine Track:

Endow a named scholarship

A gift of $500,000 endows a half-scholarship for one Maine student per year in perpetuity. Maine Medical Center will honor you, your family, an honored designee, or your organization by recognizing your scholarship fund by name. It is a meaningful legacy for the benefit of the citizens of our state. There are a number of creative ways to achieve such a gift. Our knowledgeable staff will be happy to talk with you about this. Please email John Curran, Associate Vice President for Philanthropy or call him at (207) 662-4236.

Subsidizing one student's four-year scholarship

$100,000 pledged over four years provides a half-scholarship to one student for the course of his/her medical school studies. You, your family, an honored designee, or your organization will be recognized through the naming of the scholarship. A member of our team will be honored to assist you in this, please email John Curran, Associate Vice President for Philanthropy.

Subsidizing one year of a student's scholarship

A gift of $25,000 subsidizes the cost for a Maine student to attend medical school at an in-state rate for one year. A gift of this type is exceedingly helpful in making this program possible. Please contact us so that we can assist you in your generosity.
