Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

When a baby is born prematurely or with a serious health condition that requires intensive care, our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (BBCH) is located within the Family Birth Center allowing for immediate care of babies by an extensive team of doctors and staff specially trained to care for newborns.

The largest and most comprehensive program of its kind in Maine and New Hampshire, our NICU cares for more than 900 newborns a year. Our neonatologists (specially trained physicians who care for newborns) provide 24-hour in-house coverage at the hospital.

A 31-bed unit, our NICU includes a team of:

  • Neonatologists
  • Dedicated in-house pediatricians
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Registered nurses
  • Respiratory therapists

As part of BBCH, you can be reassured that your baby is getting the highest quality care in our NICU with support by a broad range of Board-certified pediatric subspecialists – including Maine’s only pediatric cardiovascular surgeon and pediatric neurosurgeon. Other subspecialties include pediatric cardiology, pediatric neurology, genetics, pediatric surgery, pediatric pulmonology and more all readily available for consultation. This unique team of specially trained hospital staff are also involved in research that help provide the newest treatments for your baby, all while being sensitive to your needs as a family.

For newborns who require less intensive care, such as intravenous medications and tube feeding, there is our Continuing Care Nursery (CCN) a 20-bed unit with single, private rooms staffed by the same highly specialized team of nurses and doctors as the NICU.

Our NICU is the only one in the state that has the support of the March of Dimes Family Support Program. This program has a dedicated staff person who focuses on the parents and their needs as they go through what can be a very scary and difficult time. And for comfort, every room is private to allow families the space to remain close and bond with their baby. Together, this soothing environment gives families privacy while providing a nurturing place for babies’ recovery. You can connect with other NICU parents through the March of Dimes website.
