With rural services for expectant mothers in Maine at a critical juncture, the administrator of the federal Health Resources and Services Administration will speak, along with state officials and health care providers at a press conference set for 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29.
Portland, Maine – The administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will visit Stephens Memorial Hospital on Monday, a MaineHealth critical access facility. She will highlight HRSA-supported programs that expand access to obstetrics and maternal care, as well as other vital services, in rural and underserved communities, and will announce new federal funding that will strengthen maternal health care in Maine and surrounding areas.
HRSA Administrator Carole Johnson will be joined by Maine Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Jeanne Lambrew and other officials and clinicians working with HRSA to support the agency’s efforts to help reduce disparities in birth outcomes, expand and diversify the health care workforce and increase access to obstetrics care for underserved rural mothers.
The administrator’s visit comes at a critical time for rural maternity services in Maine. The event will highlight efforts to serve the needs of expectant mothers, including a mobile unit used by MaineHealth providers to deliver care in hard to serve communities in the state.
