Cancer Care and Blood Disorders

The Oncology teams at Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital have been forming complete circles of care around cancer patients and their families for over 65 years combined. For surgery, treatment, recovery, education and support, you can count on our team beside you.

The Cancer Care Center at Pen Bay Medical Center provides cancer treatment and support, detection and diagnosis, plus a full range of educational and counseling services. Our goal is to provide the best, most up-to-date cancer care to our patients, allowing them to stay close to home. The center is staffed by on-site, board-certified hematologist / oncologists and an oncology certified nurse practitioner. Our nurses have a special interest in cancer and many are oncology certified nurses. Our oncology certified social worker is dedicated to the unique needs of cancer patients.

The center provides outpatient oncology and hematology care services to adults eighteen years and older.

Palliative Services

Our goal is to promote the best possible quality of life for patients and their families living with a serious or life-threatening illness. We will communicate and collaborate with your doctor to provide you with the best possible supportive care.

Highlights

  • We are also members in the Association of Community Cancer Centers (the past president of the association is our very own Ginny Vaitones). www.accc-cancer.org
  • The center has access to all other Pen Bay Medical Center departments such as pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, respiratory and other medical staff resources in order to provide coordinated and efficient delivery of care to our patients.
  • The center actively participates in a variety of community outreach activities and we work collaboratively with other departments to coordinate these programs and services.
  • We work closely with two centers that provide radiation to our patients. Because of the distance, there is a gas card program available, free transportation and free rides on the ferries that travel in from the Island communities.
  • We feel that clinical trials are an important part of cancer care. We have a dedicated nurse who screens all patients for eligibility in a clinical trial.
  • Coordination and follow-up of care is part of the care that the cancer center provides. As a member of MaineHealth, we are collaborating together to meet the needs of our cancer patients through innovative programming i.e.; regional nurse navigator, regional tumor boards and access to genetic counseling.
  • We have developed a survivorship program, helping patients who have completed treatment understand their unique medical history and follow up plan.

Assistance in Accessing Radiation Service

The Cancer Care Center of Pen Bay Medical Center does not offer radiation services. We do, however, work closely with two centers that provide radiation to our patients.

  • a gas card program to qualifying patients
  • free transportation and free rides on the ferries that travel in from the island communities
