About Saint Joseph's

Saint Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Residence, a subsidiary of Maine Medical Center, has been serving our community since 1975. We are committed to the health, well-being and dignity of our residents. Our compassionate care team provides expert long-term, skilled nursing, memory, palliative, respite, pastoral and hospice care in a home-like environment. Medicare has awarded Saint Joseph’s a 4-star quality rating. This overall rating is based on our excellent performance on three metrics: health inspections, staffing and quality measures

Approach to Care

Our goal is to provide maximum restoration of physical, mental, social and spiritual functioning through the use of a multi-disciplinary team approach to disability and disease. We aim to meet resident needs of self-esteem, affection, belonging, achievement, recognition, independence and hope. We understand the limitations imposed by the aging process and recognize that behavior changes can be a sign of compensation for loss of function. We believe that each resident should be treated with the honor, respect and reverence that is fitting to their dignity as a human being, regardless of sex, gender identity, race, ethnicity, disability, socioeconomic or other backgrounds. We provide holistic care with as much restoration of body, mind and spirit as possible.

Daily Life

Our residents’ lives are full and varied. Each day we laugh together and enjoy each other’s company. We provide art lessons, cooking groups, fundraisers, bingo, cocktail parties, dance classes, gardening club, spa days, movie matinees, and of course our ever-popular weekly performances by local entertainers. We also take advantage of all that Portland has to offer with resident outings to a wide range of area events and attractions such as: scenic tours, Casco Bay cruises, Sea Dog games, state parks, local beaches, farmers’ markets, museums, and the Oxford Casino. All activities are facilitated by trained activity professionals.

Intergenerational Living

At Saint Joseph’s we understand and encourage the enrichment in our residents lives by promoting socialization, community involvement and friendship. We value the type of connection that our residents make with younger generations and support their ability to teach valuable lessons to others. We also believe that a younger population is able to bring new ideas and interests into our residents lives. By offering college students an opportunity to live in our facility, we support their professional and personal growth by allowing them real life working experiences. Students gain valuable knowledge by working directly with our residents and by developing professional and communication skills. Students are required to work a minimum of 16 hours each week but additional time spent with residents is strongly encouraged. Students currently have private rooms with a shared bath and shower room. A common area is available for students along with a meal purchasing program.
