Arrhythmia | Irregular Heartbeat
Heart specialists at MaineHealth evaluate, diagnose and treat arrhythmias, which are abnormal heart rhythms. We bring expert cardiac care to community hospitals, so that patients can get treatment for abnormal heart rhythms close to home.
What is arrhythmia?
Arrhythmias are caused by problems in the electrical system of the heart. When electrical impulses do not travel normally through the heart, this causes abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias. The heart can beat too slowly, which is called bradycardia. The heart can beat too fast, which is called tachycardia. Or, the heart can stop altogether, which is called sudden cardiac death syndrome.
The most common type of serious arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation, or AFib. AFib is an irregular heart rhythm that is often very fast. People with atrial fibrillation are at higher risk of stroke.
