Vascular and endovascular surgeries are treatments for conditions of the blood vessels and lymphatic system, also known as vascular diseases. Doctors and surgeons at MaineHealth offer the most advanced surgical treatments for vascular care, including bypass surgery and endovascular therapy.
Bypass surgery reroutes the blood supply around a blocked artery.
Endovascular surgeries are minimally invasive techniques to repair problems with the blood vessels. Endovascular surgeries are done inside the blood vessels.
What is vascular disease?
Vascular disease is any condition that affects the blood vessels (arteries and veins) that pump blood throughout the body.
Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to every part of the body, including the brain, kidneys, intestines, arms, legs and the heart itself. Veins return blood back to the heart. Blood vessels in other parts of the body can become clogged and hardened from atherosclerosis, the build-up of fatty plaque in the arteries. They can also weaken and burst.
