What is pediatric palliative care?

Pediatric palliative care focuses on giving care and comfort to children who face serious illnesses. Palliative care is a growing healthcare specialty that focuses on quality of life for the child and the child’s family. Pediatric palliative care can help children with pain relief and in dealing with the emotional and psychological challenges of having a serious medical condition.

Pediatric palliative care specialists care for the patient while working with the entire family. Together, children and their families can learn the best approach to improving comfort and quality of life.

Who can receive pediatric palliative care?

Young patients with advanced and life-threatening illnesses can receive pediatric palliative care. A young patient does not need to have a terminal diagnosis to receive care. Children who have the following conditions often receive palliative care:

  • Cancer
  • Genetic disorders
  • Heart and lung conditions
  • Neurological disorders
  • Babies born prematurely
