Physical Therapy (PT)

The skilled, licensed physical therapists at MaineHealth get patients moving. Our physical therapy programs help patients improve fitness, move more easily and manage pain. Physical therapists work with patients of all ages to get stronger and build skills.

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy (PT) treats a range of health problems. Physical therapy can help people with injury, illness or a development disorder. Physical therapy includes an evaluation and treatment to prevent, improve or restore movement and function.

Physical therapy usually includes hands-on treatment and exercise. Physical therapy often is done together with other therapies, including occupational therapy and speech therapy.

  • Stroke

  • Back pain, spine and neck disorders

  • Sprains and strains

  • Lymphedema

  • Developmental conditions in children

  • Orthopedic disorders in adults and children

A doctor’s referral will be needed for physical therapy.

Physical therapy services

When you first see a physical therapist, you will have an evaluation. The therapist will ask about your family history and medical history. Based on your diagnosis and needs, your physical therapist will develop a treatment plan. Your physical therapist also may show you exercises and stretches to do on your own.

At MaineHealth Care at Home, our physical therapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists help people who have had a major trauma or serious illness. Therapists work with patients in their home. Patients are able to gain strength and skills to promote independent living. Physical therapists help patients improve movement after an accident or a joint replacement. They provide safety assessments, teach balance and help patients exercise.
