What is a telehealth visit?

A telehealth visit is like a regular health care appointment without having to travel to a doctor’s office. Instead of meeting in person, you’ll speak with a care team member using a phone or computer. Video conferencing technology allows you and your doctor to see each other while you talk. For video visits, you can use your computer, smartphone, or tablet. Just like a regular health care appointment, you can use a telehealth visit to discuss medical concerns, symptoms, get a prescription, a diagnosis, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about telehealth during the COVID-19 outbreak?

Telehealth may be a helpful option any time, but it is especially important during an infectious disease outbreak. Telehealth protects you – and your health care team – from possibly spreading or getting COVID-19. It can help contain the spread of COVID-19 in our communities and reduce the risk of sick patients having to travel for an office visit.

What services can I receive via telehealth?

There are many services that can be provided through telehealth during this time. Your health care providers will work with you to determine if a telehealth visit is right in your situation.

Will my insurance pay for telehealth visits?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most insurance companies are covering telehealth visits. However, you should check with your insurance carrier to confirm that telehealth visits are a covered benefit under your plan.

What if I don’t have access to a smartphone or computer with a camera?

If you do not have access to a camera to do a video visit with your provider, you have the option to do a telephone call with your provider instead.

Do I need to know a lot about computers to use telehealth?

Right now, MaineHealth uses an app called called Zoom to do telehealth visits. It is very easy to use. See our Zoom User Guide.

I heard there are Zoom privacy concerns. Is that true?

MaineHealth uses a version of Zoom that supports your privacy during telehealth visits. This version is designed to meet current federal health care privacy laws (also known as HIPAA). It prevents many of the Zoom security concerns seen in the media over the past few months.
