MaineHealth Emergency Medical Services Stephens Hospital is the is the regional emergency response and transport service for Oxford County, Maine. 

If you or someone you know is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please call 911. We average a three-minute response time from the moment a 911 call is received until our ambulance leaves the garage. We respond to an average of 3,000 calls per year, with a paramedic dispatched on every emergency call.

MaineHealth Emergency Medical Services Stephens Hospital maintains 24 hours per day, 7 days per week coverage through out the year. Our team of paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) is committed to positive community activities, good stewardship of resources, and respectful, excellent patient care. We participate in the Vial of Life program which allows for quick access to medical information in case of emergency.

What are paramedics?

Paramedics are health care professionals who render advanced care on the scene of an emergency and in transit from an emergency scene to the hospital. 

What are EMTs?

Emergency medical technicians, or EMTs, are health care professionals who assist paramedics as they use defibrillators, pacemakers and IV lines to stabilize emergency patients.

Dial 911 immediately in the event of:

  • Severe difficulty breathing, especially that does not improve with rest.
  • Chest pain
  • A fast heartbeat (more than 120-150) at rest especially if associated with shortness of breath or feeling faint
  • You witness someone faint/pass out or someone is unresponsive (comatose)
  • Difficulty speaking, numbness, or weakness of any part of the body
  • Sudden dizziness, weakness or mental changes (confusion, very odd behavior, difficulty walking)
  • Sudden blindness or vision changes
  • Heavy bleeding from your mouth, nose, vagina or bottom
  • Bleeding from any wound that won't stop with direct pressure
  • Broken bones visible through an open wound, or a broken leg
  • Drowning
  • Choking
  • Severe burns
  • Allergic reaction, especially if there is any difficulty breathing
  • Extremely hot or cold
  • Poisoning or drug overdose
  • New severe headache
  • Sudden intense severe pain
  • Someone is threatening to hurt or kill themselves or someone else
