Established in 1974, the MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship program is a three-year combined pulmonary disease and critical care medicine fellowship fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Our principal training sites are MHMMC (Portland and Brighton campuses), New England Rehabilitation Hospital, the MaineHealth Institute for Research, and Chest Medicine Associates. The program presently enrolls two fellows per year.

Our program offers a broad clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic respiratory diseases in the inpatient (ICU and Consult Services) and outpatient settings. Practical application of pulmonary physiology, biology and experimental medicine is also a focus.

Producing thoughtful, experienced and proficient pulmonary and critical care medicine physicians is considered pivotal to our program. The research months provide a wide variety of opportunities in both clinical and basic science research.

Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI)

The MHMMC Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship is committed to fostering a collaborative, respectful and equitable environment where our learners, faculty, and teams can thrive in an ever-changing global community. This program does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender (identity), age, religion, language, ability/disability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, military status, geographic region, country of origin, or any other applicable protected status. We are committed to recruiting diverse fellows and faculty through:

  • A holistic review of applications is used during recruitment with emphasis on the “distance traveled” and unique experiences that enrich the academic environment. Candidates will not be screened for aforementioned status. Photos of candidates will be unavailable to reviewers during the screening of applicants.
  • Prior to the interview season, the program director will emphasize the importance of a diverse training environment to both Fellows and Faculty. Faculty will be coached to avoid questions that could trigger implicit bias during the interview season.
  • The Pulmonary & Critical Care Fellowship program will advocate for the recruitment of diverse faculty by the pulmonary and critical care service lines at MHMMC.
