Nephrology Fellowship

Welcome to the Nephrology Fellowship program at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC)! We are committed to providing comprehensive training in clinical nephrology, equipping our fellows with the knowledge and skills required to become independent and competent nephrologists. Our program aims to graduate fellows who are prepared to practice general nephrology and engage in medical education, research, and advocacy. With a strong emphasis on faculty mentorship and feedback, we strive to cultivate a supportive, inclusive learning environment.  We are deeply committed to caring for our diverse patient population while working to reduce healthcare disparities in Maine.

Founded in 1991, our two-year fellowship program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We accept two new trainees each year. As a referral center for the entire state of Maine and parts of New Hampshire, our fellows gain extensive exposure to nephrology across diverse clinical settings. The division is staffed by 15 faculty members with specialized clinical and research expertise in:

  • Acute kidney injury
  • Continuous renal replacement therapies
  • Glomerular Diseases
  • Kidney transplantation and immunosuppressive therapies
  • Home dialysis therapies
  • Kidney genetics and polycystic kidney disease
  • Nephrolithiasis care and prevention
  • Dialysis vascular access
  • Plasmapheresis
  • Renovascular disease and hypertension
  • Medical education and artificial intelligence

Special features of our program include:

  • Interventional Nephrology – staffed by 3 interventional nephrologists, our program provides fellows with dedicated training in dialysis vascular access intervention, including specialized rotations and mentorship for future career opportunities in this field.
  • Specialized outpatient clinics including Glomerular Disease Clinic and ADPKD Clinic.
  • Renal Pathology – fellows work with our renal pathologist and participate in twice-monthly pathology conferences.
  • Multidisciplinary Inpatient Transplant Service – staffed by transplant nephrologists, transplant surgeons, internal medicine residents, advanced practice providers, and a transplant pharmacist.
  • Point-of-Care US (POCUS) curriculum.
  • Night Float Call – Fellows participate in the Night Float call system for two blocks per year, each lasting two weeks, with no daytime duties during these periods.

Our fellows actively participate in medical education and teaching. Internal medicine residents and Tufts University School of Medicine students rotate on the consult service. Fellows interested in medical education can further their teaching skills through courses offered by the Maine Institute for Teaching Excellence (MITE) and the GME Medical Education Track for Fellows.

Our graduates have a 100% pass rate on the American Board of Internal Medicine Nephrology Board Certification exams, and former fellows have moved on to a variety of successful community and academic positions across the country. We are excited that you are interested in our program and look forward to your application.
