Compassionate, hospital-based, behavioral health care for adults
Our care team includes a psychiatrist, psychiatric nurses, social workers, and technicians who specialize in the treatment of behavioral health conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and co-occurring substance use disorder. The average length of stay is approximately seven days, and discharge planners assist in securing timely and appropriate aftercare services.
Inpatient care
MaineHealth Behavioral Health at Spring Harbor devotes more than sixty beds to the inpatient care of adults with behavioral health conditions and co-occurring substance use disorders. Our treatment program emphasizes return-to-work strategies and cognitive therapies to help patients transition from the hospital to the community in the shortest possible time.
Private and semi-private rooms feature a private bath, wardrobe, writing desk and views of the wooded grounds and recreational areas. These are designated rooms for family meetings and individual consultation between the physician and patient. The well-maintained hospital grounds feature an adult courtyard with reflecting pool and gazebo designed for meditation, short strolls and conversation. A gym, fitness room and walking paths provide recreational therapy.
Outpatient care
MaineHealth Behavioral Health at Spring Harbor offers outpatient behavioral health care for adults with behavioral health conditions and co-occurring substance use disorders. Programs include the partial hospitalization program (PHP), intensive outpatient program (IOP) and medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Located in downtown Biddeford, these services are designed to provide people with recovery skills in a safe, confidential and supportive environment.
For Admission to Spring Harbor Hospital, at least one of the following severity of illness elements must be met (medical necessity) and the patient cannot be safely managed at a less intensive level of care:
- The patient has attempted to seriously harm self within 72 hours prior to the admission.
- The patient has attempted to harm others and/or property within 72 hours prior to admission and this behavior is judged attributable to mental illness.
- The patient is considered at significant and imminent risk to seriously harm self. The patient is considered at significant and imminent risk to seriously harm another person and/or property as a result of a serious mental illness.
- A deterioration in the patient's level of functioning has occurred, resulting in an inability to adequately care for physical needs and representing the potential for imminent serious harm to self.
- There is an active psychiatric disorder interfering with the diagnosis and/or treatment of a serious medical condition and it is not responsive to a less intensive level of care.
- Diagnostic assessment and/or treatment has been unsuccessful at a less intensive level of care with persistence or worsening of symptoms that significantly interfere with the patient's functioning.
- The patient's condition is complicated by the need to provide for initiation of psychotropic medication.

Medical patients at our sister hospital, Maine Medical Center, may receive consultative support for their co-occurring mental health disorders from our expert psychiatric team. The Consultation and Liaison Service offers training, psychiatric consultation, and psychiatric liaison services to the clinical departments of Maine Medical Center and is actively involved in liaison arrangements with the hospital’s nursing, social work, and administrative departments.
The team includes a psychiatrist who consults with medical inpatient doctors, and a substance use counselor who provides evaluation and referral services for patients with co-occurring disorders.

Individuals in psychiatric crisis can turn to the Maine Medical Center Emergency Department for expert intervention services, resolution, and discharge to the home or to an appropriate provider of psychiatric care. The department functions in close coordination with Spring Harbor Hospital and multiple community agencies to avert hospitalization whenever possible.
