What is reproductive endocrinology?

Reproductive endocrinology is medical care that treats hormone disorders that affect the ability to have children.

Conditions affect reproductive health

Reproductive endocrinologists treat conditions that affect reproductive health. Those conditions include:

  • Infertility: Not being able to get pregnant (conceive) after trying for a year.
  • Fibroids: Noncancerous growths in the uterus that may develop during childbearing years. Fibroids may cause heavy periods and lower back pain.
  • Endometriosis: Tissue that usually grows in the uterus starts to grow outside the uterus. It may cause heavy periods, spotting, lower back pain and stomach pain.
  • Ovarian cysts: Sac or pocket on or within the ovary. Ovarian cysts usually go away without medical treatment. Common symptoms may include irregular periods, cramping, back pain, side pain, and pelvic pain.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): Enlarged ovaries with small cysts. Symptoms include menstrual problems, weight gain and excess hair growth.
