MaineHealth medical assistant apprenticeship in southern, mid coast and western Maine
MaineHealth partners with Southern Maine Community College and York County Community College to offer accelerated 9-month, paid medical assistant apprenticeship programs.
Learning modules include Medical Office Administration, Billing and Coding, Medical Terminology and Clinical Procedures I and II and more. Upon completion, students:
- Receive a certificate
- Are eligible for 27-30 college credits at the community college level
- Are prepared to sit for certification exam
- Can be hired into the medical assistant position
Apprentices are paid $18.00 per hour for 20 hours a week of clinical time. Medical assistants completing the program and hired into placements are required to work at a MaineHealth practice for a minimum of 12 months after training program completion. After program completion and passing the certification exam, medical assistants who are hired are paid $21.22 per hour.
Southern Maine Community College medical assistant registered apprenticeship
This program serves apprentices hired by MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC), MaineHealth Medical Group, Mid Coast Hospital and MaineHealth Stephens Hospital.
- 9-months long
- Part-time, paid clinical apprenticeship (20 hours per week)
- Cohorts start in summer, fall and winter
- Classes meet from 8 am-5 pm one day per week at Southern Maine Community College’s South Portland campus or on the Mid Coast Hospital campus in Brunswick (depending on cohort/calendar start) for 9 months
- In addition to class time, clinical apprenticeship is performed for 20 hours per week
- Additional time needs to be dedicated for studying and review of course materials
- Registered apprenticeship with the Maine Department of Labor
Admissions and Application Requirements:
- High school diploma, GED, or Hi-Set from U.S-accredited institution
If your high school diploma is from a non-US institution, you must submit English language proficiency scores. Minimum English Accuplacer score of 500 (minimum of 230 on both reading and writing) or CASAS English score of 240
- 18 years of age or older
- Authorization to work in the United States

York County Community College medical assistant registered apprenticeship
This program serves apprentices hired by MHMMC Biddeford/Sanford.
- 9-months long
- Paid, part-time apprenticeship (20 hours per week)
- Cohorts start in August and February
- In-person classes meet every Wednesday either 9 am-12:30 pm or 1 pm-4:30 pm (depending on cohort start) at York County Community College in Wells
- In addition to in-person class attendance requirements, there are also class requirements online which may vary from week to week
- The minimum total time students must commit to class attendance and coursework is 20 hours per week
- In addition to class time, clinical apprenticeship is performed for 20 hours a week
- Registered Apprenticeship with the Maine Department of Labor
