Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

The MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) Surgical Critical Care Fellowship is a one year, ACGME-accredited program that provides advanced training in all aspects of surgical critical care, including state-of-the-art clinical care and research. Our multi-disciplinary program is lead by critical care specialists who are board-certified in medicine, surgery and anesthesia. Each faculty member will play a key role in your education as you develop expertise in caring for the critically ill.

Our Mission

The core mission of our program aligns with that of MaineHealth: Working together so our communities are the healthiest in America. Although academic achievement and scholarship will be integral to the development of trainees, producing strong clinicians exposed to a large array of complex problems will be the main thrust of the program. We are committed to training fellows in the clinical management of complex surgical and medical problems in critically-ill surgical patients. Upon successful completion of the fellowship, fellows will be eligible for board certification in surgical critical care.

About MaineHealth Maine Medical Center

MHMMC is the only institution in the state with a comprehensive graduate medical education program. We are also Maine’s largest hospital and the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the state. MHMMC serves the state of Maine and Eastern New Hampshire - not only as a trauma center but also as an overall medical and surgical tertiary care referral center. MHMMC is among just 5% of hospitals of in the nation certified by The Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Fellows will be active in the care of MHMMC patients in the hospital. Our surgical critical care department averages 18 patients daily. MMC also offers a cardiovascular teaching program which permits expanded fellowship experiences in neurological and cardiovascular critical care.
