Anesthesiology Residency

William "Chase" Boyd, MD

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland (MHMMCP) stands as Northern New England's premier Level 1 trauma center and a vital tertiary referral base, serving over one million people. Our institution is nationally recognized as a regional leader across numerous complex surgical disciplines, including cardiac, vascular, thoracic, pediatric, high-risk obstetrics, neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery.

The Department of Anesthesiology at MHMMCP is a dynamic group composed of approximately 60 anesthesiologists, 32 anesthesiology residents, 2 cardiothoracic anesthesia fellows, and over 100 CRNAs. United by a shared mission, we are dedicated to delivering patient centered care distinguished by excellence, collaboration, and innovation. Furthermore, we are deeply committed to fostering the development of outstanding, well-rounded clinicians and healthcare leaders, and advancing medical knowledge through robust scientific and clinical discovery. In line with this commitment, we have recently expanded our program to eight categorical residency positions per year.

Our residency program, founded in 1953, upholds a long and proud tradition of providing outstanding and rigorous clinical training. A unique feature of our program is the advantageous ratio of our small residency size relative to our substantial case volume. MHMMCP provides over 40,000 anesthetics annually across the MaineHealth Portland Campus and the MaineHealth Surgery Center Scarborough. This high surgical volume allows us the distinct ability to prioritize resident case assignments based on individual educational needs rather than solely on clinical service demands.

We have been fortunate to recruit a diverse cadre of exceptionally strong clinical educators from across the country, ensuring a rich and varied training experience. The majority of our faculty members hold fellowship training, and correspondingly, more than half of our residents pursue fellowship opportunities post-residency. The consistent strength of our match results serves as a testament to the excellence of our residency program.

Beyond rigorous training, a unique hallmark of our department is the genuine emphasis placed on work-life balance within a supportive, family-like atmosphere. While we are passionate clinicians, educators, and investigators, we also embrace our roles as parents, athletes, pilots, sailors, artists, and musicians. We firmly believe that cultivating a healthy balance between professional responsibilities and personal pursuits is fundamental to building long, productive, and rewarding careers—and fosters a more engaging and collaborative work environment.

Located in the heart of New England and just two hours north of Boston, Portland, Maine, offers an exceptional quality of life with a broad array of activities and amenities. Residents enjoy unparalleled access to outdoor recreation—including skiing, fishing, hiking, sailing, rafting, and biking—complemented by a vibrant cultural scene featuring live music, acclaimed restaurants, and thriving arts.

We take immense pride in our anesthesiology residency program and genuinely appreciate your interest. If you are seeking a training environment that offers a unique and rigorous clinical experience, fosters educational and research excellence, and demonstrates a steadfast commitment to work-life balance, we strongly encourage you to contact us for further information.

Sincerely,

W. Chase Boyd, MD

We welcome your interest in our program, one where you will receive top-tier training in anesthesiology while enjoying the unique charm and lifestyle of Portland, Maine.
