Integrative Medicine at Maine Medical Center

Alternative therapies such as massage and meditation can complement your medical care during a hospital stay. Ask a Maine Medical Center care team member for more information. Please check with your health insurance provider about coverage before scheduling integrative therapy services.

What is integrative medicine?

Integrative medicine focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles, optimizing health, preventing illness, and treating both acute and chronic conditions. It provides care that is highly responsive to the needs and health of individual patients. This approach may be appropriate for patients who want to focus on preventing illness, as well as patients who have been diagnosed with a new condition that has not improved with conventional medical care alone.

Services include:

  • Lifestyle medicine
  • Osteopathic medicine
  • Medical acupuncture
  • Mind-body medicine
  • Nutritional counseling

Other therapies that may be recommended:

  • Acupuncture
  • Massage
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi and Qi Gong

During your stay at Maine Medical Center, you may request a massage by a licensed massage therapist, who is also a registered nurse. This service is available Monday - Friday and payment is due at the time of treatment. Ask your nurse for more information. Your insurance carrier may not cover this service.

Relaxation guides and music videos are available during your stay at Maine Medical Center. Tune in to the Relaxation Channel any time of the day or night. We also offer a free class to help you prepare for surgery and manage any feelings of anxiety or stress about an upcoming procedure.

We will teach you simple exercises–such as breathwork, music, imagery, and positive thinking–and help you develop a personal plan that best meets your needs. Class participants report that they feel better able to cope before, during and after their surgery.

This free class is offered on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 4 - 5 pm in Scarborough, Maine. For more information, please call 207-396-7280.
