MaineHealth Waldo’s rich history dates to 1900 when Dr. Samuel Johnson advocated for a community hospital and Mr. Charles Frederick agreed to donate the David Peirce Estate on High Street in Belfast as its first location. The hospital officially opened its doors to patients in 1904, and a nursing school was run at the hospital from 1907 to 1948, graduating 130 nurses during that period. The current hospital, located at 118 Northport Ave. in Belfast, was opened in 1958 thanks to contributions from many local donors. Since then, it has expanded to include five rural health centers and the Biscone Medical Building, located across the street from the main hospital building at 119 Northport Ave, which opened in 2016.
