Menopause Treatment

Women can experience the beginning of menopause in their 40s or 50s. Menopause ushers in many changes that can cause anxiety, even depression. Talk to your provider, if you are having menopausal symptoms and need relief.

Talk therapy can help women work through the changes and learn the best ways to care for their body in a new life stage.

What is menopause treatment?

Menopause is when the reproductive hormones a woman has start to decline. It is a natural occurrence that starts when a woman is in her 40s or 50s. A woman is considered to be in menopause when her last period was 12 months ago.

Menopause symptoms

Menopause is a normal part of the aging process. Yet when a woman leaves her reproductive years, it comes with symptoms. Symptoms can cause anxiety and discomfort.

Menopause symptoms include:

  • Hot flashes

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Bone weakening

  • Hair changes

  • Hormone changes

  • Memory problems

  • Mood swings

  • Vaginal dryness

Talk with your provider if you believe you may have menopause symptoms to see if any treatment options can work for you.

There are many menopause treatment options available

Treatment for menopause focuses on relieving symptoms. They include:

  • Self-care: Women may focus on healthy eating, meditation, relaxation exercises and yoga.

  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT): Estrogen, progesterone, or a combination of estrogen and other medications can help balance the hormone changes that women experience during menopause. There are risks that come with HRT that you will need to discuss with your provider.

  • Counseling: Menopause can be difficult for some women because of the changes they experience. Talk therapy can help patients work through the changes and learn the best ways to treat their body in a new stage.

  • Osteoporosis treatment: Women can experience loss of strength and durability of their bones which can lead to osteoporosis, or weakening of the bones. A provider may recommend for a woman to have a bone scan to check for signs of osteoporosis. Depending on the diagnosis, a woman may be advised to adjust her diet, do weight-bearing exercises and take medication.
